The College of Science and Allied Health at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse recently instituted a cross-disciplinary minor in Computational Science. This minor satisfies the College Core requirements and allows science majors to augment their primary major with a background of the methods and application areas of computation in the sciences. This minor is an outgrowth of the Scientific Visualization Project.

The starting point of the minor is a survey course of computational methods and their application to specific problems in the sciences. This course covers a broad range of topics in numerical methods, parallel and distributed computation, fluid flow, cosmology, DNA sequence matching and cognition. The goal is to illustrate how direct computational methods are solving research problems in the sciences. This page shows some of the topics covered in the course.

The Navier-Stokes equations describe the behavior of fluid motion under certain assumptions. The following three QuickTime (TM) movies show a simulation of the flow in a square cavity which is heated at the center of the bottom edge and cooled on the remaining sides. The images and movie frames are 128 pixels square. The velocity field is color coded so that the x-y components of the velocity vector are represented by the red-blue components of the color. Specifically, the interval [-1,1] of the x component maps onto the interval [0,255] of red (similarly blue).
